Being in its proximity wears me out and is like having a low-level frequency of humming in my ears all day long.

I can get a physical rush from acquiring stuff. That’s why if the price is right (or perhaps free), I’ll talk myself into getting a less-than-desirable item.

I shouldn’t feel guilty if I don’t want to keep something that was received as a gift. I know this sounds heartless, but my mom reminds of this often, and it’s an extremely freeing concept.

Nostalgia is a strong driver for keeping some things I don't use.

When it comes to clothes, I should only keep what fits me well.

I love hair products and I'm not willing to change that part of my life (seriously).

It's easier to part with stuff when I can give it to someone I know.

A room with less stuff simply feels lighter.

Other people can help, and also hinder, my efforts to de-clutter my space.

If I use something once each decade, I probably don’t need it.

If my stuff isn’t serving a purpose, I sometimes don’t notice it, even if I walk by it each day.

I only scratched the surface of what I can get rid of in my house. At times, I felt resistance and I want to part with more things that make me feel uncomfortable.

My stuff has been part of my evolution. It illustrates interests and hobbies that have come and gone, lessons I’ve conquered, skills I’ve acquired, good choices I’ve made (as well as bad ones), and my stuff has defined certain periods in my life.

It’s easy to think material things automatically equate to pleasure, but they often end up being a burden.

I’m not Mother Theresa — I still want stuff. But I recognize that not all stuff is created equal. I need to be even more particular about what I bring into my presence.

Overall, eliminating stuff has been a metaphor for how I want to keep growing in life. Every now and then, it’s time to clean the literal and figurative house — to remove stuff, jobs, obligations, people, etc., that are no longer serving me. By doing so, it creates space for other more beautiful and fulfilling things to enter.

I like the color, but the formula isn't my favorite, so it doesn't get used often. While we're on the topic of red lips, I first started seriously wearing these bold hues when my girlfriend gave me a tube of red on Valentine's Day (how adorable is that gift, by the way?). It was the perfect shade for my coloring and complexion, which is the key to any woman pulling off a red pouter. So, while I'm parting with this red beauty, I still have others in my repertoire, including one I just wore this last weekend.Michelle Crumpler | Violin Lessons| Copywriting + Squarespace Web Design tag:www.michellecrumpler.com,2005:Post/30520622014-07-01T18:52:10-07:002017-01-14T11:07:21-08:00Days 23–28: Odds 'n' Ends

They've been sitting in a box for the better part of the last year. I was planning to mail them to a friend's kid, but that never happened, probably because it would have cost a small fortune (those suckers were heavy in that box!).

Holding onto these stamps made me realize that it's easier to part with stuff when I know who will be the next owner. But when someone I know says "I can use that," I have no hesitation to cut ties with my stuff.

From now on, I'm going to try and feel better about donating to the nameless and faceless individuals who will end up with my old items. For example, maybe some mom will buy my stamps at Value Village, and they'll keep her kids busy this summer creating all sorts of art projects. That's a way better scenario than the stamps sitting in my dark basement, not getting used.

Michelle Crumpler | Violin Lessons| Copywriting + Squarespace Web Design tag:www.michellecrumpler.com,2005:Post/30223912014-06-17T16:24:14-07:002017-01-14T11:07:20-08:00Day 12: Breathe Only on the Days That You Eat I'm getting rid of this mug, but I love the simplicity of the three things I chose to paint on it:

"Breathe."

"You're amazing."

"Release tension."
Michelle Crumpler | Violin Lessons| Copywriting + Squarespace Web Design tag:www.michellecrumpler.com,2005:Post/30223522014-06-17T16:17:05-07:002017-01-14T11:07:20-08:00Day 11: Most Days I've Gone Mad"When you are in love, you greet each day with a banana peel in your heart and a tennis shoe on your face."

"I like you as much as I like lawn mowers."

"When I first saw you, my knee cap went tingly all over."

You've gotta love Mad Libs. One of them is about 17 years old… I'm not sure if that's impressive or really gross. I've been told that my hair is sort of "my thing" — it always looks good, no matter what. It's kind of true. Some girls never leave the house without mascara, but for me, it's a well-behaved head of hair. I walked from the living room, to the dining room, to the kitchen, to the office, to the bathroom, and I even looked in two closets. Still, I was having a hard time finding my singular (yes, just one) item to eliminate. Hmmm... I need to ponder this resistance a bit more in a future posting.

In any event, I landed on this pink coat for today. I bought it at a second-hand store with the original tags still attached. I'll be honest: I didn't love this coat. The color isn't my favorite and it has a slit up the back (not the most attractive feature for someone like me with an ample back side). After hemming and hawing, I came to the illogical conclusion that I simply had to have it.

My lesson from this item is that I sometimes make clothing purchases based on price, even if something doesn't look great on me. In these instances, I'm always ignoring my intuition. Ultimately, this means I don't end up wearing these items or I don't feel good in them when I do. From now on, I’m going to make a more concerted effort to not let price be the key driver for my clothing decisions. I mean, it's better to buy nothing at all then to spend a penny on something I don't love.

Michelle Crumpler | Violin Lessons| Copywriting + Squarespace Web Design tag:www.michellecrumpler.com,2005:Post/30069652014-06-10T17:06:47-07:002017-01-14T11:07:20-08:00Day 7: Hat (But Not Cat)

I'm getting rid of this hat today. So today, I was reminded that nostalgia can be a strong driver for keeping things you don't use.

Michelle Crumpler | Violin Lessons| Copywriting + Squarespace Web Design tag:www.michellecrumpler.com,2005:Post/30021242014-06-09T21:24:23-07:002017-01-14T11:07:20-08:00Day 5: The 12th ManOne day while walking during my lunch hour in downtown Seattle, I noticed a small swarm of people ahead. I could see that something free was being handed out. Without much thought, I found myself waiting in line for one of these flags. This makes absolutely no sense, given the fact that I'm not into spectator sports, and especially not football.

This flag has never been used. Deep down, I knew that would be the case... so why did I feel compelled to get one? I believe it was because I was overtaken by the energy of the crowd and the excitement about getting something for free. The buzz on the street made me forget that I, Michelle Crumpler, am not the 12th man.

I better get rid of this flag, like quick, before a crowd of you football lovers shows up to persuade me otherwise.

Michelle Crumpler | Violin Lessons| Copywriting + Squarespace Web Design tag:www.michellecrumpler.com,2005:Post/30001832014-06-07T12:50:35-07:002018-05-01T21:24:48-07:00Day 4: What's for Dinner?
I don't know when my obsession with cookbooks began. I could blame it on an inherited family gene or being a victim to the masterful marketing of the cookbook industry. But I think the real reason is that I like to cook.

Today I removed 14 cookbooks from my collection. Here's why I'm parting with these particular books:

The pages are practically spotless. In contrast, the books I actually use have food splatters and stains on the pages.

There aren't many pictures. I love looking at inspiring and beautiful pictures — it's part of the cookbook experience for me. (I also appreciate the short anecdotal stories authors include with recipes.)

Taste. Despite whatever dietary regimen I may be adopting at the moment (for example, dairy-free, gluten-free, etc.), I no longer will settle for mediocre food. If the cookbook is filled with recipes that meet my dietary needs, they still need to make me want to eat!

I don't regret having purchased these books in the first place — they're part of my evolution. They have been teachers over the years. Initially, they taught me the basics of cooking. But as time progressed, I started to realize that I was able to apply the learned skills and be inspired to cook more intuitively on my own. That seems to be precisely in line with what any great teacher does.

Michelle Crumpler | Violin Lessons| Copywriting + Squarespace Web Design tag:www.michellecrumpler.com,2005:Post/29992672014-06-06T17:58:37-07:002017-01-14T11:07:20-08:00Day 3: No Longer My MasterThis Brew Master and Wine Master are no longer welcome in my home. These portable, hand-held gadgets help you pair the best beer or wine with your meal, point you to locations of famous wineries/breweries around the world, include drinking games and jokes, as well as tell you how to give a toast in 47 different languages. And in the event that those things are expertly achieved, you'll likely need their tips for curing hangovers. But, hey, since I can now get all of that information on my phone, these guys have gotta go.

P.S. You can still buy a Brew Master on Amazon for $6.75 (or a Wine Master for $5.76). But I'll give you mine for free if you call within the next 15 minutes.

Michelle Crumpler | Violin Lessons| Copywriting + Squarespace Web Design tag:www.michellecrumpler.com,2005:Post/29944752014-06-05T09:08:31-07:002017-01-14T11:07:20-08:00Day 2: The Ugly AdornmentI got rid of this today... it's not for dusting, it's not a cat toy, and no, it's not part of a Raggedy Ann doll. It's actually a decorative tassel made of yarn. I remember accepting this as a gift from someone, and feeling somewhat confused about its purpose at the time. Nevertheless, it's been hanging near my fireplace for the last couple years. And since I don't love it, I'm returning it to the universe.

Michelle Crumpler | Violin Lessons| Copywriting + Squarespace Web Design tag:www.michellecrumpler.com,2005:Post/29919052014-06-04T14:30:18-07:002017-01-14T11:07:20-08:00Day 1: Out of SightToday I went through a desk in search of one item to part with, but without much effort, ended up with two full grocery bags. Value Village will soon be receiving a head scratcher, two old pairs of sunglasses, six keychain flashlights that I picked up at a health fair sometime around 1997, and more than 40 VHS tapes.

One of the VHS tapes was the movie "Out of Sight." This phrase made me realize something very important: I have certain things in my house simply because there’s physical space to put them. And as long as those items can be out of sight, I operate as if there's no reason to get rid of them.

This "out of sight" approach used to work for me, but lately, it's been providing some tension. Stuffed desk drawers with hidden, but useless items, are bogging me down. I've been feeling this for a while, so I'm inspired to explore the relationship I have with my stuff in the coming month!
Michelle Crumpler | Violin Lessons| Copywriting + Squarespace Web Design
